Embracing the Beauty of Your MESSAGE

Welcome back to the #beYOUtifulmessage series…if you missed Monday’s post, “Finding the Beauty in Your MESS”,  you can read it here to get caught up! After reading about finding the beauty in your mess…were any of you able to reflect over your past year and see where God has met you in your messes? How has He removed unbelief and replaced it with hope? I’d love to hear about your personal discoveries! Be sure to leave a comment to share!

In discovering the beauty found within your mess…you can in turn begin to embrace the beauty of your message…

You see, once we take a hard look at our mess…often times, we can see how God has used it for our good. We can see that while we were trudging through our messy swamp, God was not only pulling us out of that mess and setting our feet upon a rock, making our steps secure…but He was also working in us to restore us into the person He created us to be.

Let’s revisit Psalm 40: 1-3

“I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.”

The first half of verse 3 is where I want to focus today and I’ve bolded it above…

“He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God.”

Jumping backwards 4 years…(because I need to trudge through 4 years of “mess” to SEE and EMBRACE the true beauty of it – perhaps you do, too.), each year can be summarized as follows: 2012 brought my life-threatening illness…2013 brought emotional healing and a hope in IVF…and that trickled into 2014. And after all that…

My song went a little something like this…”For everything I’ve already been through…the sickness I suffered, the mere fact that I can no longer carry another child, because my little girl needs a sibling…I deserve for this (our surrogacy journey) to work. It will work because we deserve it after everything we’ve been through.”

That’s a terribly selfish and close-minded song, isn’t it?

And then…2014 brought loss and confusion after what I thought I deserved did not work. God then used 2015 to make sense of the past three years…to help me discover and embrace the message hidden under the layers of confusion, pain, heartbreak, false hope (in the wrong things), selfish wants, worldly desires, and an “I deserve this” attitude. For me, 2015 was a year of restoration…a year of clarity.

When I reflect on 2012-2015 and look for God in my mess…He is clearly there. He was there the whole time…waiting for me to look for Him…waiting for me to set my eyes on HIM…waiting for me to realize that I was suffocating and that HE is the air that I need to LIVE…waiting for me to reach for HIM so that He could pull me out of that miry bog and set my feet upon a steady rock.

In Jeremiah 29:13, we are told, “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”

ALL your heart!!

And guys…when I did, when I began to search Him out, when I set my eyes on Him…when I looked to Him to fulfill my needs…when I reached for Him, I found Him! He pulled me out of my life mess, set my feet upon a rock, and put a new song in my mouth…one that sings of His praise, rather than of my woes.

One that goes a little something like this…”God fulfills my needs…He is not a God who operates by giving people what they “deserve”…If He were, we would all deserve to die a sinner’s death…the one that Jesus died for us, in our place on the cross, for we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Because of Jesus, we are free to LIVE. Because of Jesus…we have the gift of eternal life with Him forever. My lips will sing His praises for His steadfast love is better than life.”

God has put a new song in my mouth…one that sings of His praise. One that lights up my heart for the things that light up His. Through the messes that I trudged through, God has unveiled my beautiful message…He has helped me to embrace it. And today, I am truly thankful for it.

I challenge you today to listen to your own song…is it an old song, one that declares your plans? It’s okay if that is where you are! Remember, we ALL have fallen short…we’ve all been there…and God meets us there to deliver us from our old song. Or is it a new song that you’ve allowed God to put in your mouth, one that glorifies God? I pray that 2016 is a year in which you begin to sing a new song…a song that reflects Jesus, that brings joy to your heart, peace to your soul, and a HOPE for your tomorrows!
